“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against the house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” (Luke 6:46-49, NLT)

I believe this passage gives us a key that will help in making it through the struggles of life. Sometimes the struggles of life we face can be due to our own choices or mistakes. Sometimes it can be because we don’t listen to the voice of God, or we do but don’t follow the instruction we are given. When we apply verse 47, verse 48 becomes the fruit of it.

Sometimes, I’ve done this myself, we go to God for help and He gives us an answer but we don’t follow through with it. Most of the time it’s due to fear and a lack of confidence. But, when we listen to His voice and follow His instruction we are digging down deep to lay a solid foundation. Each time you listen and do, you dig a little deeper. The deeper you dig, the more solid your foundation becomes. When the waters rise you stand firm because of your foundation.

Most of you know my full time job is in the construction industry and the most important part to a house or any structure is the foundation. A lot of focus and engineering goes into the part of the house that becomes mostly hidden once the project is complete. Many people won’t see the struggles you face and they won’t see how you dealt with everything but it’s the unforeseen parts of your life that produce a strong foundation. It’s the desert times in your life when you chose to hear the voice of God and apply His instruction that dug your foundation down a little deeper. Most people building a house aren’t too concerned about the foundation, they focus on the appearance and what people can see. A good builder, however, knows that a good foundation is what maintains the appearance.

God, our builder, knows that a good foundation in our lives is what will keep us standing. He uses the struggles of life to make us stronger and if we will purpose to listen to His voice and do what He tells us it will produce a great harvest in our lives.

I pray that these teachings throughout this week have helped you. I pray they have encouraged you to keep going and maybe even give you a different perspective into the struggles of life that come our way. God bless you as you embark on the journey of 2016, it’s going to be a great year with much fruit.
